Course Information: Explore international public health and observe missional medicine firsthand while living on a research campus in the rural African community of Macha, Zambia. Mornings spent rounding with physicians or observing the clinics and operating theatre of the Macha Mission Hospital enhance afternoon classroom lectures and discussions. Develop a deeper understanding of health care systems and disease patterns common among the Global South, and learn how cultural practices and customs, as exemplified by people in the Southern Province of Zambia, relate to health and health care.  Build relationships within the community daily and as part of a 3-day homestay.
*Prerequisites of BIOL 170 or NUTR 222.

Estimated Course Fee: $4,600

Faculty Biographies:

Dr. Larry Mylin (PhD) recently retired from full-time teaching as Professor of Biology in the Department of Biological Sciences where he routinely taught Microbiology, Genetics, and Immunology and led an active research program that studied cellular immunity in the control of cancer. For twenty years, Dr. Mylin has traveled almost yearly to Zambia for “Healthcare in the Developing World” and a Zambia Cross Cultural course and spent a three-month sabbatical doing malaria research at Macha.  He and his wife Linda have widespread relationships throughout the Macha community and a deep appreciation of the local culture, food and traditions.
Dr. John Harms (PhD) is a Professor of Biology and Assistant Chair in the Department of Biological Sciences where he routinely teaches Physiology, Cancer & Cell Biology, Diversity of Life, and Natural Sciences Capstone.  His research team seeks to understand how a hormonal signaling pathway contributes to the aggressiveness and treatment resistance of pancreatic cancer.  Dr. Harms has helped lead “Healthcare in the Developing World” twice previously and his love for the Macha people has prompted him to return with his wife and children to serve together in the community.
Dr. Sarah Jones
(PhD, RN, CNE) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing. Courses she has taught majors include Historical and Conceptual Basis for Nursing, Nursing Care of Adults and Older Adults, and Leadership in Nursing. As a professional nurse, she enjoys serving clients to meet medical, surgical, critical care, leadership, and pain management needs within healthcare settings and values assessment research. Dr. Jones has previously co-led both the Zambia Senior Nursing Practicum in Macha and “Healthcare in the Developing World.”
